Front cover illustration
A tissue section from a mouse tongue infected with the fungal pathogen Candida albicans. Note the presence of C. albicans hyphae (purple staining) and the ‘furry’ appearance at the outer edges of the tissue section which is indicative of the presence of multiple fungal elements and severe infection. The tissue was fixed in buffered formalin, stained using a standard periodic acid-Schiff reaction and counterstained with haematoxylin. Image courtesy Dr David A. Schofield, Guild Associates Inc., Charleston, SC, USA. See the paper by Westwater et al. in this issue, pp. 1138-1144.
