Front cover illustration

A sub-viral particle of adenovirus 3, the penton-base dodecahedron, has been proposed for use in targeted drug delivery. Control of particle assembly and passive encapsidation of a marker molecule has been demonstrated by Fuschiotti and co-workers (Fuschiotti et al., 2006, J Gen Virol 87, 2901-2905). The marker molecule used, Nanogold, is represented schematically as a gold ball. Penton-bases, represented as coloured surface renditions from a three-dimensional reconstruction of cryo-electron microscope data, entrap the Nanogold as they assemble to form the 250 Å diameter dodecahedra in response to changing buffer conditions. In the background are free penton-bases (top) and assembled dodecahedra (bottom) as visualized by electron microscopy. For more information, contact Dr J. F. Conway, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Pittsburgh, PA 15260, USA (jxc100@pitt.edu).
